In the National Assembly elections held yesterday, 18 candidates of the ruling coalition have won, while UML has avoided a ‘clean sweep’ by winning one seat in Province 1.
Forty-three candidates from nine political parties, including the ruling coalition, had filed nominations for 19 seats in the National Assembly. The ruling Congress, the Maoist Center, the Unified Socialists, the Janata Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Janamorcha had retained their seats and shared eight vacant UML seats. In Madhes Province, UML and LSP had formed an alliance for the election.
In Province 1, a total of eight candidates had filed nominations for three posts, where two candidates from the alliance and one from the CPN-UML have emerged victorious. On the other hand, after Guru Baral of UML and Gopal Basnet of Nepali Congress got equal votes, the Election Commission declared Gopal Basnet of Nepali Congress as the winner from the lucky draw.
In Madhes, both the candidates of the ruling coalition have won. Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) candidate Mohammad Khalik Siddiqui and Maoist candidate Urmila Aryal won the women’s seat.
Similarly, three candidates of the alliance have been elected in Gandaki Pradesh. In the competition for three posts, Kamala Pant of the Nepali Congress, Suresh Kumar Alemgar of the UCPN (Maoist) and Bhuvan Sunar of the UCPN (Maoist) emerged victorious.
In Lumbini Province, three candidates of the alliance have won the election. According to the results of the election held in Ghorahi of Dang, Yuvaraj Sharma of Congress , Rajendra Laxmi Gaire of Unified Socialist and Tul Prasad Bishwakarma of Rastriya janamorcha have won the election.
In Karnali, three candidates of the alliance, Durga Gurung of the Congress, Uday Bahadur Bohara of the Unified Socialists and Nara Bahadur Bista of the Maoists have also won.
Similarly, the candidates of the ruling coalition have also won in the far-western Province. The three candidates of the coalition from the far-western region are Garima Shah of the Unified Socialists, Jagat Bahadur Parki of the UCPN-M and Narayan Dutta Mishra of the Nepali Congress.
With the National Assembly election held yesterday, the CPN-UML has shrunk from 31 seats in the National Assembly to 17 seats. Despite losing its dominance in the National Assembly, the UML has managed to retain its position as the largest party in the National Assembly with 17 seats. Similarly, the Maoists are second with 15 members and the Congress is third with 10 members. The Unified Socialist Party is the fourth force in the National Assembly with eight MPs. The National Assembly will have three members from JSP, one from LSP, one from Rastriya Janamorcha, one independent and three nominated members.
