After the criticism and right-wing outrage, a giant flag of European Union displayed at the Arc de Triomphe has been removed.
The giant European flag was placed there after France took on the bloc’s presidency. France has taken over the EU’s rotating presidency for the next six months. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen said “replacing” the French flag at the monument was an attack on the country’s identity.
Conservative candidate Valérie Pécresse also objected to the matter. She tweeted, “Presiding over Europe yes, erasing French identity no! I solemnly ask Emmanuel Macron to restore our tricolour alongside that of Europe under the Arc de Triomphe. We owe it to all our fighters who shed their blood for him.”
