Citizenship Act Amendment Bill proposes to grant citizenship only in mother’s name too

Kathmandu – The Citizenship Act Amendment Bill brought by the government has made a provision that citizenship can be obtained only in mother’s name too.

Section 4 of the proposed bill states that if a person applies that he or she does not want to mention their father’s name, surname, and address in the Nepali citizenship certificate, the Nepali citizenship certificate issued to such a person should be issued without mentioning any details in the places where the father’s name, surname, and address should be mentioned.

According to the prevailing law, an application for citizenship must be submitted along with the Nepali citizenship certificate of the father or mother or relatives within three generations of one’s lineage.

In addition, when applying for citizenship, a recommendation made by the rural municipality or municipality must be submitted, revealing the birthplace and relationship.
