Deceased Nepali soldier in Congo has been identified

The identity of a soldier who was killed in a rebel attack while serving in the Congo from the Nepal Army under the United Nations peacekeeping mission has been identified. The deceased has been identified as Anil Gurung of Gurbhakot-14, Surkhet, according to the Nepal Army Public Relations Directorate.

Gurung was injured when rebel militia attacked a Nepal Peace Corps team commanded by Chief Nikil Kunwar during Operation Bali on Tuesday. According to a statement issued by the Directorate,he was rescued from a helicopter and taken to Labial-2 Hospital in Buniya for treatment, where he died .

Chief of Army Staff Prabhuram Sharma has expressed his condolences to the family of Gurung, saying that the incident shocked the Nepal Army. He also paid homage to Gurung’s sacrificial contribution.

The Secretary General of the United Nations has also issued a condolence statement expressing his condolences to the families of the deceased peacekeepers as well as the Government of Nepal and the people of Nepal. He also called on Congolese authorities to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
