Kathmandu – A target has been set to reach a total electricity installed capacity of 28,500 MW by 2035 to supply and export the projected domestic electricity demand for energy production. By Kartik of the current fiscal year 2081/82, the total installed capacity of projects including hydropower and solar co-generation has reached 3,243 MW.

As projected in the Sixteenth Plan (2081/82-2085/86) issued by the National Planning Commission, it is found that a total of 11,739 MW of electricity installed capacity is targeted to be generated by 2085/86. To achieve this target, an Energy Development Roadmap, 2081, has also been prepared. The Roadmap has been approved by the Council of Ministers .

A roadmap has been prepared to maximize the development of internal sources of energy production that can make a significant contribution to the national economy, to increase the state’s internal electricity consumption, to achieve the potential returns of internal electricity trade, and to develop the state’s energy sector in a planned and timely manner.

Towards the electricity transmission line, a target has been set to complete the construction of 6,431 circuit km of 132 kV, 4,61 circuit km of 220 kV, and 6,440 circuit km of 400 kV transmission lines and increase the capacity of substations to 40,000 MVA.

Similarly, towards the electricity trade, a target has been set to export up to 10,000 MW of electricity to neighboring countries, India, and 5,000 to 15,000 MW of electricity to Bangladesh and China. To achieve these goals, a total investment of 46.5 billion US dollars is required for electricity generation, transmission, and distribution structures.

This investment will be managed through the mobilization of capital from the government, private sector, general public, and foreign investment, as well as non-resident Nepalis and Nepalis working abroad. A time-bound 81-point action plan has also been prepared for the effective implementation of the roadmap.
