Strike impact on East-West Highway and Mechi Highway

The Biratnagar-Mukumlung Protection Inter-Party Struggle Committee has called for General strike( Banda) in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, Tehrathum, Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Ilam and Panchthar districts for today and tomorrow to protest the construction of the Pathibhara Cable Car. The first day of the strike seems to have had a general effect.

Passenger vehicles are not seen on the highways in the areas where the strike has been called on Sunday morning, while protesters can be seen taking to the streets and squares. The strike seems to have had the most impact on the East-West Highway and Mechi Highway. Traffic on the East-West Highway and Mechi Highway is almost at a standstill.

The strike has been called by the supporters of the “no cablecar movement”, demanding that the decision to build the cable car be revoked, leaders and cadres arrested during the “No Cable Car movement” be released, a judicial investigation be conducted into the shooting incident in Mukumlung be conducted, and the security forces be withdrawn from the Kafle Party.
