Kathmandu — More than 5,500 absconding defendants have been arrested in the five months from Shrawan to Mangsir of the current fiscal year. According to the Police Headquarters, 5,846 absconding defendants have been arrested from across the country during this period.
Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police Bishwa Adhikari informed that 5,846 absconding defendants who were convicted and sentenced for various crimes have been arrested and presented before the court for execution of the verdict.
According to him, the court had imposed a total imprisonment sentence of 1,968 years, 9 months and 8 days on those defendants. Similarly, the court had ordered a total fine of Rs 430 million, 542 thousand and 54 rupees from them.
According to the spokesperson, the highest number of absconding defendants, 1,594, have been arrested in Madhesh Province. 735 people have been arrested in Koshi, 265 in Bagmati, 506 in Gandaki, 1,035 in Lumbini, 169 in Karnali Province, and 235 in Sudurpaschim Province.
Similarly, 1,253 people have been arrested in Kathmandu Valley and the Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested 54 absconding defendants.
