National Labor and Employment Conference in Falgun

Kathmandu – The government is organizing a National Labor and Employment Conference with the aim of strategic action plan for the Decade of Internal Employment Promotion for Production and Productivity Enhancement. The Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security is organizing the fifth edition of the National Labor and Employment Conference in Kathmandu on February 28 and 1st March 2025.

At a press conference organized at the ministry , Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Dandu Raj Ghimire informed about the preparations for the two-day conference. Spokesperson Ghimire said that the main organizing committee has been formed under the coordination of the secretary of the ministry for the labor and employment conference, which mainly focuses on contemporary reforms in labor laws and policies.

Similarly, it has been informed that preparations for the conference are progressing by forming a preparatory committee under the coordination of the National Program Director of the Prime Minister’s Employment Program and seven subcommittees under the coordination of the heads of the divisions and subordinate offices of the ministry.

Secretary Mukundra Prasad Niraula informed that the objective of the conference is to analyze the challenges faced in the internal and foreign employment sectors and receive suggestions for future policy and legal amendments.

He said that the ministry is emphasizing that the country has only considered foreign employment as a short-term strategy for economic prosperity and that the future course of action should be to increase domestic production and productivity.

The conference is said to establish inter-level and inter-agency coordination and collaboration to create a labor and employable environment.

“Through the conference, the ministry will internalize the suggestions received by the government from workers, employers, researchers, and individuals and organizations active in this field as feedback for the upcoming policy and legal reforms to be adopted,” said Secretary Niraula.

The two-day conference will be attended by nearly 500 people, including government from all three levels, private sector, trade unions, businessmen and researchers/experts related to employment and productivity growth, development partners, non-governmental sector, and youth. The ministry is also preparing to participate in the conference through ‘virtual’ means.

It is said that information related to the labor and employment conference will be provided at the conference venue through stalls of the ministry, private sector, and other development partners. The ministry has organized four labor and employment conferences since 2054 BS. The fourth conference was held in 2076 BS.
