A clash has broken out between police and locals at Dhamboji Chowk (Birendra Chowk) in Nepalgunj of Banke district after the police administration intervened while placing the statue of late King Birendra.
During the People’s movement of 2062/63 BS, the statue of the late King Birendra was vandalized. In the memory of the Durbar massacre some independent activists, nationalist youth groups and RPP leaders and activists had restored Birendra’s statue in the place where only the national flag had been kept for a long time.
Clashes broke out between the police and the locals after the police intervened and removed the statue. Police fired tear gas and aerial fire to control the situation after the clash. Some youths were also injured in the clash, said RPP Assistant General Secretary Rishi Raj Devkota.
Earlier, the same group had placed a statue of former King Tribhuvan at Tribhuvan Chowk in Nepalgunj. Although the police and the administration tried to remove the statue, the administration backed down after the public protested.
