Students have protested against Kathmandu Medical College saying that they have been charged more than the prescribed fee by the Medical Education Commission. On Wednesday, various student organizations, including medical college students, staged demonstrations and sit-ins in Kathmandu.
The students have complained that they have been threatened not to sit for the exam if they do not pay the additional fee. Students enrolled in MBBS have been agitating for the past few days after the Kathmandu Medical College (KMC) in Sinamangal demanded an additional fee of around Rs 2 million. Similarly, students of Nobel Medical College in Biratnagar headed by KMC director Sunil Sharma are agitating.
The Medical Education Act also mentions that the examination fee will be included in the lump sum tuition fee. According to the student, the medical colleges of KU have also violated the fee payment system prescribed by the commission. The act stipulates thatone-third of the fee should be taken from the student in the first year and the remaining amount should be taken in annual instalments.
The fee for MBBS is Rs 4 million inside Kathmandu Valley and Rs 4.4 million outside. According to the students, the medical colleges have already taken all the money before the end of the third year.
