While the ruling coalition is discussing the issue of going to the polls only by amending the Local Level Election Act, General Secretary of the Nepali Congress Gagan Thapa said that the alternative kept forward by the ruling coalition regarding the local level election is not constitutional.
Stating that the issue of interpreting the constitution and amending the law on the issue of local elections will not be constitutional, Thapa said that Congress should not carry such issues.
Thapa also said that he had informed the party president and prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba about the issue and would take up the matter at a meeting of the ruling coalition scheduled to be held at the PM’s residence in Baluwatar today at 9 am.
Stating that he is hopeful that today’s meeting of the coalition would move towards fixing local elections, Thapa said, “The leaders of the coalition would also understand the issue and I am confident that the coalition will not do anything that is in conflict with the constitution.”
