India-Nepal border checkpoints to be closed 72 hours prior to the election

It has been decided to close the border checkpoint 72 hours before the upcoming local level election. The decision was taken at a coordination meeting of security officials of Kapilvastu, Rupandehi, West Nawalparasi and Siddharthnagar Balrampur districts of India in Bhairahawa of Rupandehi.

During that period, the exit and entry for people will also be completely closed. There will also be a joint patrol of Nepali and Indian security personnel at the border point targeting the election.

During the meeting, security officials from three districts of Nepal and two districts of India discussed the security of the election and a plan was also formulated. In the run-up to the election, the security officials of the two countries have decided to make the border checkpoints systematic and dignified.

Similarly, sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages will also be banned at the border.

Decisions have been made to set up security checkpoints at the border, exchange information immediately, control drugs, human trafficking and smuggling of illegal weapons, trade in illicit currency, conduct awareness programs in border areas and increase border surveillance.

On the other hand, the Indian security officials have expressed their commitment not to allow the printing work to be done against the code of conduct in the flex machines and press which are on the Indian side to enforce the code of conduct.

India have also agreed to repair and manage the border post. In 2006, a joint agreement was reached between the Joint Technical Boundary Committee of Nepal and India.

In that agreement, it was agreed that the pillar of odd number will be repaired by Nepal and the pillar of even number will be repaired by India.
