An Indian excavator has reached Nepal, changing the course of the Mahakali River, which separates Nepal’s Darchula and India’s Dharchula. An Indian excavator has landed on the Nepali side of the river Mahakali Municipality-1, Kalona, the headquarters of Darchula.
India, which has been speeding up the construction of embankment on the border river Mahakali, unilaterally reached the Nepal side of the Mahakali river on Saturday and Sunday morning. Indian excavator has reached the bank of Nepal by changing the course of Mahakali river.
Saturday and Sunday morning, the stone from the Nepali side along the Mahakali river has moved towards the Indian side of the embankment. The Indian excavator carried the stone from the Mahakali River from Nepal side and diverted the river towards the village of Kalona which is now in complete danger.
After the deployment of the Armed Police Force of Nepal, the Indian excavator has returned to its own land but however, it is likely to flood the village of Kalon in the current rainy season.
Locals have been protesting after the Indian side started constructing embankment. The embankment is being constructed in places to push the water of Mahakali river towards Nepal, which is 9 meters above the previous embankment (towards Nepal).
According to international treaties and agreements, no country is allowed to build physical infrastructure without the consent of each other affecting the flow of the border river. However, locals have protested saying that India is building embankment to divert the flow of Mahakali towards Nepal without international law and mutual consent.
Despite of the repeated land encroachment by India and all the other facts on border issues with India, Nepal government has not shown any interest in solving the issue.
