Around 700 meters of BP Highway swept away by floods: Traffic Halted

Kathmandu — Continuous rainfall has caused floods and landslides that severely damaged several sections of the BP Highway. According to district police offices, at least 12 locations in Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli districts have been blocked.

Police in Kavrepalanchok reported that from Bhakundebesi to the Sindhuli border, nine sections of the highway have been obstructed. In several places, parts of the road have collapsed or been washed away by floods, and officials say traffic is unlikely to resume soon.

The Araniko Highway, however, remains partially operational. At Khawa, traffic is moving one way, but movement in other sections is completely blocked.

In Sindhuli, floods and landslides have also caused major destruction along the highway. Police said that between Nepal Thok and Dumja, floods have washed away roads at three points about 300 meters at one site, 100 meters at another, and 50 meters at the third.

The Roshi River has washed away around 250 meters of road near Nepal Thok, and a large landslide has occurred in Gajuli Dah. Another landslide has been reported in Kanadhungre of Sunkoshi Rural Municipality-6.

Police stated that the road from Nepal Thok to Khurkot has been partially reopened for one-way traffic, while clearing work continues in several areas. Since major portions of the road have been washed away, authorities say it will take time before traffic can fully resume. Vehicle movement on the highway has been completely halted since Saturday.

Nighttime Vehicle Ban on BP Highway Extended Until August 31

Kathmandu — Considering the risk of floods and landslides, nighttime vehicle movement on the BP Highway has been banned until August 31.

According to a joint decision by the Kavrepalanchok and Sindhuli administrations, private and public vehicles will not be allowed to operate from 5 PM to 5 AM.

Authorities said that with the monsoon active across the country, there is a high possibility of disasters such as floods and landslides at any time, prompting the extension of the nighttime travel ban for another 15 days.

Earlier, starting June 21, the local administration had already been enforcing a ban on vehicle movement from 5 PM to 5 AM due to the risk of floods and landslides.

Nighttime vehicle driving banned on BP Highway

Kathmandu – Nighttime traffic has been banned on the Kavrepalanchok section of the BP Highway from today, August 15, for one month.

According to the District Administration Office, the nighttime traffic has been banned from Kavrebhanjyang in Kavre to Nepalthok on the Sindhuli border from 5 pm to 5 am (12 hours).

The Security Committee meeting held on July 15 had decided to ban nighttime vehicle driving for one month, citing the possibility of a catastrophic incident due to the active monsoon.

According to Kavrepalanchok Chief District Officer Umesh Dhakal, vehicles going from Kathmandu at night will be stopped at Kavrebhanjyang in Kavrepalanchok and vehicles coming towards Kathmandu at Nepalthok on the Sindhuli border due to the risk of floods and landslides during the rainy season.

Last year, the floods and landslides in Asoj damaged an eight-kilometer stretch of the BP Highway from Chowkidanda in Kavrepalanchok to Barkhekhola in Sindhuli. Out of the total 160 kilometers of the highway, the floods and landslides damaged 84 kilometers of the road, including 34 kilometers from Khurkot in Sindhuli to Nepalthok in the third section and 50 kilometers from Nepalthok to Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchok in the fourth section, according to the Division Road Office, Bhaktapur.
