Nighttime vehicle driving banned on BP Highway

Kathmandu – Nighttime traffic has been banned on the Kavrepalanchok section of the BP Highway from today, August 15, for one month.

According to the District Administration Office, the nighttime traffic has been banned from Kavrebhanjyang in Kavre to Nepalthok on the Sindhuli border from 5 pm to 5 am (12 hours).

The Security Committee meeting held on July 15 had decided to ban nighttime vehicle driving for one month, citing the possibility of a catastrophic incident due to the active monsoon.

According to Kavrepalanchok Chief District Officer Umesh Dhakal, vehicles going from Kathmandu at night will be stopped at Kavrebhanjyang in Kavrepalanchok and vehicles coming towards Kathmandu at Nepalthok on the Sindhuli border due to the risk of floods and landslides during the rainy season.

Last year, the floods and landslides in Asoj damaged an eight-kilometer stretch of the BP Highway from Chowkidanda in Kavrepalanchok to Barkhekhola in Sindhuli. Out of the total 160 kilometers of the highway, the floods and landslides damaged 84 kilometers of the road, including 34 kilometers from Khurkot in Sindhuli to Nepalthok in the third section and 50 kilometers from Nepalthok to Dhulikhel in Kavrepalanchok in the fourth section, according to the Division Road Office, Bhaktapur.

11 dead including 7 people from the same house due to a landslide in Kaski

Pokhara – Due to continuous rain since Thursday night, 11 people died in Kaski, including 7 from the same house.

7 members of the same family were buried inside their house after a landslide in Pokhara Metropolitan City-19 Tallakot. Three people have died after being buried in a landslide in Chainpur.

When a landslide came from above the house in Pokhara-19 Purunchaur Tallakot, destroyed a one-storied house with a mud and tin roof, around 10:30 on Thursday night . 47-year-old Kul Bahadur Pariyar, his wife 43-year-old Mankumari, 85-year-old mother Laxima, 15-year-old daughter Prashana, 20-year-old daughter Prabha, son-in-law. 25-year-old Asmeet Pariyar and her relative Radhika Pariyar, a resident of Tallakot, died in the landslide reported Kaski Police. According to police, among the dead, Prabha came from Chitwan with her husband Asmit. Neighbour Radhika Pariyar died while trying to rescue those buried in the landslide.

Aarti Ojha’s daughter, 18-year-old Anita Ojha, 11-year-old Anushka Ojha and 9-year-old Prateek Subedi died when a landslide destroyed the house of Aarti Ojha in Chainpur in Pokhara-32, police said.

Similarly, 80-year-old Maitikumari Gurung died after being buried in a landslide in Madi Rural Municipality Ward No. 11 Lower Saple. 55-year-old son Om Bahadur Gurung was rescued safely, police said. The bodies of all the deceased have been kept at the Pokhara Institute of Health Sciences for post-mortem.

Floods and landslides in Darchula: Five dead, six missing

The life of the country has been affected by the floods and landslides caused by the incessant rains since a few days ago. Due to floods and landslides, dozens of houses have been damaged and many families have been displaced.

Dozens of families have been displaced in Darchula due to floods and landslides that have occurred since last night. According to the police, seven people, including four people from the same house, are missing and five people died due to the flood in Mahakali river and Lasku river.

Due to the flood, the road connecting Duhun Vyas through Khalanga and the road from Ringaltal to Kalunbir under Darchula Tinkar road has been blocked. The Darchula Tinkar road built through the Mahakali embankment has been completely damaged, while the motorized bridge and suspension bridge built over the Lasku river have been swept away. Dasharathnagar Basic School in Khalanga has also been swept away by the flood.

Locals said that five jeeps, a tractor and a trolley which were parked at night on the Darchula Tinkar road were swept away.

Indefinite rains affect people’s lives across the country: Hundreds of families displaced

The incessant rains since Monday night have affected people’s lives across the country and displaced hundreds of families.

After incessant rains, floods in various rivers in the eastern part of the country have inundated more than 2,000 houses and displaced hundreds of families.More than a thousand houses have been inundated in Jhapa.In Itahari municipality alone, 200 houses have been inundated due to continuous rains. 175 families have been displaced in Biratnagar and Katahari districts due to incessant rains and floods. Due to lack of proper drainage in various cities of the country including the capital Kathmandu, the main areas of the city have been inundated. Floods and landslides along with incessant rains have blocked the country’s main highways and roads, while regular air services have also been affected by bad weather.

Though those displaced by the floods have been shifted to safer places, police have urged the riverside settlements to be on high alert as the river level has risen due to incessant rains.
