Biratnagar – Four protesters and some police officers were injured when police opened fire to control the situation during a protest against the construction of a cable car in the Pathibhara area of Phungling Municipality-11 in Taplejung. The condition of three of the people who were shot is serious.
The ‘No Cable Car’ group, which is protesting against the construction of a cable car, had prepared to protest from Sunday. Nepal Police and Armed Police Force were deployed on Saturday to stop the protest. After the police reached Baludada in Pathibhara area at around 6 pm on Saturday, the protesters pelted stones. After that, the police opened fire.
According to DSP Rabi Rawal of the District Police Office, Taplejung, four protesters were injured in the clash. Yam Bahadur Limbu, Sagun Lawati, Dharman Palungwa and Mangal Lawati were injured in the clash with the police. Yam Bahadur, Dharman and Sagun Lawati were shot by the police. Their condition is serious. DSP Rawal said that the three injured were sent to Nobel Medical College Biratnagar for further treatment after treatment at the District Hospital Taplejung was not possible. Mangal Lawati’s condition is normal.
According to DSP Rawal, 12 people have been injured on the Nepal Police side. Taplejung Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma said that security personnel opened fire after the protesting party hurled slingshots and stones from the sand dunes.
There was a clash between the police and the No Cable Car party on Saturday afternoon. The police fired 12 tear gas shells in the clash. Some were also injured in that clash.
The tension arose after the construction company started work on the cable car to Pathibhara in Taplejung from Tuesday. The identity supporters are running the ‘No Cable Car Movement’, saying that the identity of the Pathibhara area will be destroyed if the cable car is built.
They were preparing to hold more protests from Sunday. Niranti Tumbapo, general secretary of Kirat Yakthung Chumlung, said that the state opened fire on people while they were preparing for a peaceful protest. Civil society and political party leaders have protested, saying that the police have used excessive force against the protesters.
